After many years of working with companies executing their IG strategy, I have boiled down the key concerns in achieving that goal to its essence. To be clear, information management is not so much about how information flows through an enterprise; but asking why do you have the information in the first place?
The key questions to answer in any IG exercise are what are our organizational objectives (business, legal and regulatory); what information is needed to achieve the objectives; how long is that information useful; how do you organize the information in terms of access, security, and privacy; and how to properly dispose of the information when no longer needed.
To that end, IG requires coordinating and facilitating information sharing among departments by establishing a clear framework whereby you obtain the objectives of each department; balance competing concerns and goals of each department; develop a coordinated response plan and execute that plan.
The hardest part is beginning. The rest is easy. 😉
